WORK PERMITS

You Will Need…

A Work Permit:

This is why it is so important to do your homework.  During this time your agency may give you a bit of homework.  Your homework will be to apply your child for a work permit.  Depending on where you live is where you will register your child for a work permit.  Your agency will direct you to the correct source. My daughter has had work permits on 2 separate coast.  When we lived on the east coast, Pennsylvania area we were required to apply in the New York area.  This is all done on-line and in my case, occasionally on the phone with a live person in the New York branch.  She also has a work permit from California.  Work permits expire.  The New York work permit last for 1 year.  California work permits last for 6 months. There are multiple requirements when applying for a work permit.  In New York you have to have a signed agency contract in order to be granted a child entertainment work permit.  This was my clear understanding.

Coogan Account:

Also in the state of New York, in order to get a work permit you must first get a coogan account.  This is a Child Entertainment Trust Court Blocked Account.  Make sure you have your signed agency contract on hand when applying for your coogan account. This was required for us in the State of New York.  We found a Wells Fargo branch that had exactly what we needed.  My California experience was a bit more relaxed and not as strict.  You will also need a signed physical from your pediatrician and signed school records from your school showing your child’s attendance and GPA; 2.5 minimal.  In my home we required my daughter to maintain the same GPA that she started with.  She manages a 3.8-4.0 GPA.

ALSO…

Agency Commissions and Contracts: This varies 10-20% sometimes more. Commissions are the percentages that are deducted from your child’s pay after working on a booked job. This is explained and understood during the contract signing agreement. The Commissions are based on individual agency requirements. The commissions are what agencies require as pay for finding work for your child. This is explained and should be clear to you upon signing a contract. Contracts with agencies are 12-24 months long, on average. This is normal. You will be contractually obligated to only use your agency during this time. I have linked the website to the on-line application www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/DLSE-Forms-CL.htm multiple times. You will find below other links under the California blue logo and under the sample Application provided for your visual assistance.
